Yaoundé Cultural Marathon
From Cameroon to the World
The Yaoundé Cultural Marathon (YCM) is not only a national festival — it is also a global platform. At its heart is Afowiri Kizito Fondzenyuy, known internationally as the Toghu Marathoner. His marathon journey has taken him across 19 races on 6 continents, each time proudly wearing Cameroon’s Toghu attire.

Through these races, Afowiri has turned running into a tool of cultural diplomacy, showcasing Cameroon’s heritage to thousands of spectators and millions of viewers worldwide.
A Legacy in the Museum

In July 2025, Afowiri donated his most cherished achievements to the National Museum of Cameroon:

  • - Toghu top and trouser
  • - Running shoes and marathon cap
  • - Guinness World Record Plaque
  • - Abbott Six-Star Medal (awarded for completing all six major world marathons)

These artifacts now sit on public display, inspiring Cameroonians that anything is possible — proof that global recognition can start from home.

Networks That Matter

Afowiri’s journey has created a powerful web of international networks:

  • - Global marathon organizations ready to support cultural innovations in sports
  • - Diaspora communities eager to reconnect with Cameroon through running and culture
  • - Cultural and tourism institutions across Africa, Europe, and North America seeking authentic partnerships

This means the Yaoundé Cultural Marathon does not start from zero — it begins with international credibility and allies already on board.
