Running the Culture: How the Yaoundé Cultural Marathon is Uniting Cameroon and Inspiring the World

A Vision Rooted in Patriotism

The Yaoundé Cultural Marathon (YCM) is not just another race; it is a celebration of identity, heritage, and unity. At its core is Afowiri Kizito Fondzenyuy, globally known as the Toghu Marathoner. Having run 19 marathons across 6 continents dressed in Cameroon’s iconic Toghu attire, he has transformed sport into cultural diplomacy.

In July 2025, Afowiri donated his most prized achievements — the Toghu top and trouser, running shoes, marathon cap, the Guinness World Record plaque, and the Abbott Six-Star Medal — to the National Museum of Cameroon. Today, these artifacts sit proudly on display, inspiring Cameroonians that anything is possible.

What Makes YCM Unique

Unlike conventional marathons, the Yaoundé Cultural Marathon is designed as a living cultural festival. It combines the endurance of long-distance running with the richness of Cameroonian traditions. Along the race route, participants will encounter:

  • Masquerades and traditional dancers energizing the runners,
  • Drumming and storytelling stations showcasing Cameroon’s heritage,
  • Fashion and food exhibitions turning the marathon into a carnival of identity.

This fusion of sport and culture makes YCM the first marathon of its kind in the world.

Driving Unity and Inclusion

The marathon is more than athletics — it is a national project of unity. With categories ranging from the full marathon to the half marathon, fun runs, and an inclusion walk, every Cameroonian can participate. Elders, youth, women, and persons with disabilities will all have a place on the course, reflecting the inclusivity at the heart of the event.

By involving groups from all 10 regions of Cameroon, diaspora communities, and international partners, YCM becomes a symbol of togetherness and solidarity.

Economic and Tourism Potential

Globally, marathons are proven economic drivers. The New York Marathon generates $415 million annually, while the Great Ethiopian Run attracts 40,000 participants and injects over $10 million each year into Addis Ababa’s economy.

For Cameroon, projections show that with just 5,000 international participants, YCM could generate 5 billion CFA annually in tourism revenue — from hotels, restaurants, transportation, crafts, and related services. Over time, participation is expected to scale to 40,000 runners, creating thousands of jobs and boosting small businesses.

A Festival with Social Impact

The Yaoundé Cultural Marathon is also a platform for social change. Organized under the banner of the Amom Foundation, the event will:

  • Raise awareness on autism,
  • Promote inclusive education,
  • Empower youth and women through volunteerism and entrepreneurship.

It is a celebration with purpose — linking national heritage to global conversations on inclusion and resilience.

Cameroon on the Global Stage

With Afowiri’s vast network of international contacts, including cultural institutions, tourism organizations, and diaspora associations, YCM is positioned to become a global attraction. It will put Cameroon on the world map of sports tourism and cultural diplomacy, joining the ranks of landmark events like the Rio Carnival and the Boston Marathon.

Conclusion

The Yaoundé Cultural Marathon is more than a sporting event; it is a national festival of unity, culture, and possibility. It stands as proof that running can go beyond endurance — it can tell stories, build nations, and inspire the world.

As Afowiri’s journey shows, when heritage runs with determination, the finish line is not just a destination — it is the beginning of a movement.
